The 2025 to 2026 ASHRAE Society theme, “Healthy Buildings: Designing for Life,” reflects a growing focus on how buildings impact the people inside them. Led by Bill McQuade, the theme highlights the importance of balancing energy efficiency with indoor environmental quality, recognizing that high-performing buildings should also support health, comfort, and productivity.

While ASHRAE has made major strides over the years in energy efficiency, sustainability, and decarbonization, this theme builds on that progress by placing more attention on the indoor environment. Factors like air quality, thermal comfort, lighting, acoustics, and water quality are all key to creating spaces where people can thrive.

At its core, the message is simple. Good building design is not just about performance metrics; it is about people. By taking a more balanced and thoughtful approach, the industry can create spaces that are efficient, sustainable, and genuinely supportive of those who use them every day.
