October 2nd - 4th, ASHRAE hosted the annual Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) Leadership Weekend, at the national headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. The Southern California chapter was fortunate to send two active chapter members, Matt Church and Michael Hass, to attend this event. The weekend long meeting was a great success, hosting 47 young engineers under the age of 35 from around the country. Activities for the weekend were a mixture of developmental exercises and networking events. After arriving in Atlanta on Friday evening, the group spent 2 hours meeting with each other and sharing each individual’s background. Then it was off to the Atlanta Braves game for a little fun. Saturday included a tour of the ASHRAE headquarters, highlighting the many energy saving features included in the building’s design and operation. Saturday afternoon, each engineer worked with another group of 5-7 on leadership development activities. Included in these exercises, each group was tasked with creating activities and programs for YEA events around the country. Saturday night was spent as a group at a local brewery for food and drinks. Before leaving Sunday each group presented their respective YEA activities to the other engineers in attendance. The goal for the weekend was to help these young engineers enhance their ability to serve as leaders both within ASHRAE and within their workplace and industry. Our chapter looks forward to the next annual meeting and the valuable lessons the next participants will bring back to Southern California.
